About Elizabeth Cottam Chef/CEO/Ambassador Soho House/Estrella Damm/LCF
I’m passionate about making positive changes in an industry that often holds itself back, helping leaders create stable, fulfilling environments for them and their people.
Chef life
I absolutely love what I do. And I wish more business leaders felt the same way. For nearly 20 years, I provided business strategy to some of the biggest companies out there, but then I took a leap of faith and opened my own restaurant. In just two years, I expanded to three and employed 70 hardworking individuals. As a team we generated a respectable £3.4m in our first collective year and we managed to get every restaurant we opened together listed in the prestigious Michelin Guide in the first 12 months of opening. Each place has its own unique concept, but they all share the same core values. A strong culture together with solid financial and management foundations are the secrets behind our success and the reason we love what we do so much.
The road to this place hasn’t been easy. Hospitality is by far the most challenging, and the most rewarding industry I’ve ever worked in. I have a pretty unique perspective on the this business. I’m passionate about making positive changes in an industry that often holds itself back, helping leaders create stable, fulfilling environments for them and their people.
Business life
Over the years, I have created countless business plans, managed many P&Ls, and overseen a number of large-scale operational transformations. In my opinion, a great business can only be run if it has a strong culture that the entire company believes in and collectively protects. Some of the biggest improvements I’ve implemented have been achieved by driving the culture agenda relentlessly. I’ve worked with a broad spectrum of industries and business types, but the goal has often been to either increase or decrease various business metrics. Of course, it hasn’t always been solely about making money; I have also worked with not-for-profit and public sector clients. However, it is always about return on investment, and effective financial management is always crucial.
